Marco Piccardo, professor at DF and researcher at INESC MN, is part of an international team that successfully generated ultrafast laser pulses (solitons) using a compact chip containing just two miniaturized lasers. This breakthrough, published in the scientific journal Nature, shows that these stable pulses—crucial for ultrafast data transmission and spectroscopy—can now be produced using a much simpler and smaller device than previously thought possible. The work is the result of years of collaborative research involving institutions such as Harvard, TU Wien, and colleagues in Italy.
