Frederico Fiúza named fellow of the American Physical Society

Frederico Fiúza, researcher and professor of plasma physics at DF, was recently named a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). This title was “created to recognize members who may have made advances in physics through research and publications, or made innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology”. Frederico Fiúza's nomination was awarded “for fundamental leadership and contribution to plasma physics in the generation of energetic particles from collisionless shocks, magnetic reconnection and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities”.

Each year, the distinction is awarded to a maximum of 0.5% of the number of APS members (excluding students), with the nomination being made by the candidate's peers and then assessed by a panel of experts in the field. Frederico Fiúza says it is “an honor and a great satisfaction to be distinguished by the American Physical Society (APS), particularly because the election is made by [his] peers in the field of Plasma Physics”. In the professor's opinion, this demonstrates that the impact of his contributions is recognized and valued at an international level, and the nomination serves to reinforce his conviction that “the work with students and collaborators is [evolving] in the right direction”.

Physics Department congratulates our colleague on this important distinction.
