Luísa Carvalho, a former PhD student at the IST Department of Physics, has been awarded one of the prestigious ATLAS Thesis Awards in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN during her doctoral research.

Her PhD work focused on exploring new sources of CP-violation in Higgs boson interactions with top quarks, as a possible way for understanding the Universe’s matter-antimatter asymmetry. Additionally, she played a key role in measuring top quark production in association with charm quarks, a critical background process in numerous physics analyses involving top quark pairs.

Beyond her main physics studies, Luísa made significant contributions to ATLAS operations and upgrades, particularly in the experiment’s trigger system. She was a dedicated presence in the ATLAS control room, serving as a trigger expert on call, and she significantly contributed to trigger performance and upgrade studies.

The ATLAS Collaboration gathered on Thursday, February 20, to celebrate its most exceptional PhD students at the ATLAS Thesis Awards ceremony. Since 2010, these awards have annually recognized the remarkable impact of PhD students on the ATLAS experiment through their thesis work.

Luísa's recognition highlights not only her scientific excellence but also the presence of our Department in groundbreaking research at CERN.

Congratulations Luísa!
