Dr. Marina Vranic is the 2022 recipient of the PRACE Ada Lovelace Award for her significant impact on High-Performance Computing (HPC) in Europe. Dr. Vranic is a pioneer in extreme plasma simulation techniques, and is also extremely dedicated to increasing the visibility of women in physics and HPC - for example, by reducing the gender imbalance of invited speakers at conferences, and by mentoring the Women in Physics group at Técnico. Dr. Vranic is a researcher in the Lasers and Plasmas Group at IPFN and a visiting professor in the Physics Department.

Launched in 2016, the PRACE Ada Lovelace Award is given annually to women scientists who have made important contributions to HPC in Europe and worldwide, and who are role models for women at the start of their careers. The recipient is announced at the annual PRACE Scientific and Industrial Conference (PRACEdays), and is invited to join the panel for a final plenary discussion.

The prize is named after Countess Lovelace, a British mathematician who lived in the 19th century and who, among others, worked with Charles Babbage on a precursor to computers. Many historians consider Ada Lovelace to be the author of the first computer algorithm.
