PICadvanced and INESC MN - Center for Innovation and Technology have established a partnership to strengthen their skills in the area of photonic chip encapsulation in Oeiras. Both partners in the Microelectronics Agenda, PICadvanced, an innovative and disruptive start-up in the area of photonics, integrated optical circuits and advanced optical encapsulation, and INESC MN - CTI in the area of microtechnologies, microelectronics and sensors, have identified the strategic objective of increasing advanced training activities in the areas of microfabrication and encapsulation of photonic chips, and exploring new technologies in the area of integrated photonics. For the past 9 years, Prof. Susana Freitas (IST Physics Department and INESC-MN) has coordinated activities with the company. This partnership, in line with the national Semiconductor strategy, will strengthen existing skills but also boost research into emerging technologies, increasing PICadvanced's competitiveness in an area that is expanding worldwide.
Some of the initiatives that will be promoted by this partnership are:
- Joint participation in projects in the area of microfabrication, integrated photonics and PIC encapsulation
- Promotion and dissemination of the two institutions' activities in these areas
- Training human resources through internships, training academies, master's theses and joint doctorates
- Coordination of efforts to re-equip and strengthen skills in microfabrication and encapsulation of photonic chips (e.g. Competence Centers, Training Academies and Pilot Lines)
