Interactions and self-interactions of nearly massless scalar fields can be relevant to both dark matter and dark energy. Here we use the Schwinger-Keldysh approach to the effective field theory of a binary system coupled to a scalar field to analyse memory effects along hyperbolic orbits or tail effects and their consequences for the dynamics of the binary system.
