Mission and History
Physics is a discipline almost as old as humanity itself, born and grown from our innate curiosity, the desire to know and understand. Despite its illustrious age, Physics is an evolving, vibrant, and dynamic discipline that continuously moves towards new directions: gravitational wave astronomy or nanophysics, for example, are fields that did not exist until relatively recently. Some of the current great challenges require a deep understanding of physical phenomena, from the use of renewable energies to aerosol dispersion, to the use of plasmas as accelerators. The entire world and the society around us can be analyzed and understood with the scientific method, which, after all, is at the heart of Physics. The recent discovery of gravitational waves and the exploration of particle accelerators have opened a new era for physics. Welcome to this wonderful world and to the Department of Physics at Instituto Superior Técnico.
Brief History of the Department
The Department of Physics is the Academic Unit of Instituto Superior Técnico responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate education in the scientific field of Physics. This Department was created in 1980, stemming from what was then designated as the Physics Section. In the early 1980s, the Department increased investment in teaching activities (establishment of two Bachelor's degrees and postgraduate programs) and intensified its connection to major European institutions for scientific research and technological development, such as the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the Joint European Torus (JET), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the International Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL). The Department of Physics thus established itself on the national and international stage.
Today, the Department of Physics at IST boasts some of the best teachers and researchers in Europe and attracts the best students in the country. The Department of Physics has over 80 PhD professors, more than 10 administrative staff members, dozens of researchers and doctoral students, and hundreds of undergraduate and master's students. The professional opportunities from its training programs are extremely varied, ranging from researchers and professors at the best national and international institutes and universities, managers of multinational companies, financial analysts, and creators of technological startups to technicians of the Judicial Police.
